Many people are unaware that mass transit is available right here in the Upper Cumberland. U-CARTS is a transit operation provided by Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA).
UCHRA Human Resources and Community Relations Director Randall Killman says U-CARTS is not just for the elderly and disabled -- it's for anyone who needs a ride.
"U-CARTS is just the same as any public transit you would see in any manor city," Killman said. "it's available to everyone, so if you need to book a local ride -- say here in Cookeville to go across town to get your haircut or go to the grocery store -- it's just a dollar each way."
U-CARTS operates in all 14 Upper Cumberland Counties. To Schedule a ride, call the central Office in Cookeville or your local county UCHRA office.
In addition, another mass transit service, CATS buses are available in Cookeville. CATS or Cookeville Area Transit System operates 26-passenger bus as a deviated fixed route bus system in Cookeville, picking up and dropping of passengers at designated points along the route.
"The CATS buses run around town, clockwise and counter clockwise each hour." Killman said. "If you see the bus, all you've got to do is wave it down and hop on to go to your next stop and it's a dollar a stop."
