Local residents who receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft and asking them to pay a fee to fix a computer virus should be wary. It’s mostly likely a scam.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department reports a local woman was on her computer last week when a pop-up displayed on the screen warning her computer may have been compromised. The woman called the number that showed up on the screen. The man who answered said he was from Microsoft and told her expert live support could fix the problem for $249.
The resident attempted to give her credit card number to pay the fee, but the person she was speaking to would not accept it and instead wanted her bank account and routing numbers.
